Biography
Born in Philadelphia, Maria Randolph Hanley has made her home the Southwest and has lived here since the early 90’s. She graduated with a degree in art education, majoring in printmaking and is the founder and President of the organization Creating Art for His Glory, a teaching and training ministry in the arts that meets monthly in Albuquerque, NM. Her love of photography and printmaking started with her first classes. "When I developed my first photograph and pulled my first print in college, I fell in love with both processes and have continued the learning process of making prints and taking photographs ever since." Her works are diverse, from imagery consisting of geometric and organic forms to landscapes and digital paintings and collages, which incorporates photography, calligraphy and printmaking processes. "I am fascinated by the southwestern landscape. The colors and vastness of the area provide much beauty for creative inspiration." Her most recent works, which consist of digital paintings and output into Giclée prints reveal the beauty of the Southwest.
Maria has exhibited and traveled widely including teaching and living in Johannesburg, South Africa and Antananarivo, Madagascar, which included camping/hiking the perimeter of southern Africa and advanced studies in Rome Italy to recent mission trips to Zambia and Israel. "The richness of the places I have lived and traveled has provided me with a variety of visual wealth." In addition to her travels she has been a gallery and frame shop owner which included a graphic design studio. She reveals that "through it all I have never lost sight using the gift God has given me – the ability of Creating Art for His Glory. It has always been a strong desire in my life. It enhances my life and others and is a gift from God, the creator of all beauty." She has won many awards and her work is included in the book Printmaking in the Sun © 2001 and at Carpenter’s Hall in Philadelphia at the Independence Square Historical site.
The Art Process
Many people ask about the creation process of my work, which I call Digital Painting/Digital Collage which is a Digital Printmaking process. First, the source of my inspiration is Scripture and God’s Divine Nature. I begin with either a photograph I have taken or a blank computer screen, similar to a blank canvas or paper. I use many different software applications to add painterly effects, draw directly on the screen via mouse or drawing tablet, scan in drawings, calligraphy and collage in photographs. I use a layering process in which a piece may contain as many as 15-20 or more layers. Some pieces may have enhancements, such as gold leaf, paint, pastel, or collage materials added to the surface of the paper or canvas after it has been printed. The image is then printed, as a limited edition Giclée print, on a large format inkjet printer using archival or acid free paper with archival inks.
